Amelia Gayle was the daughter of John Gorgas, Governor of Alabama from 1831 until 1835, and Sarah Haynesworth Gayle, of Charleston. She attended the Columbia Female Institute and studied music with Sarah Smith there. The University of Alabama library is named for her.
