Harriet Lowndes (1812-1892) of Charleston, SC, was one of the most aristocratic women in the antebellum South.

The Charleston Museum houses all of her extant music. True binder’s volumes are SMB 47-50. The remaining are quasi-complete operas in piano-vocal arrangements that she collected on her honeymoon to Europe in 1831. Most were purchased in Brussels.
More details on this collection can be found in Bailey, Charleston Belles Abroad: The Music Collections of Harriet Lowndes, Henrietta Aiken, and Louisa Rebecca McCord (2019).
